Malaysia’s geographical location has exposed it to influences from different countries and cultures over the centuries. The country’s modern architecture showcases these traditional Malay, Indian, and Chinese influences in projects characterized by innovation, sustainability, and technological prowess.
The fusion of these diverse elements can be seen in structures like the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia and Johor’s Forest City development.
Who are the design visionaries that are leading the pack when it comes to shaping the future of Malaysia’s skyline?
DRTAN LM Architect (DTLM)
DRTAN LM Architect is an architectural firm that’s based in Kuala Lumpur. Their belief is that design should create spaces and buildings that provide value for all users. Some of their notable works include Clay Roof House in Petaling Jaya, which reused the terracotta tiles of the original roof, and the Wood Box, which has a living area built as a large wood-framed box.
Code Red Studio (CRS)
Headquartered in Johor Bahru, the studio’s prominent projects have made it a major architectural player in its region. Noteworthy designs include the Bunker House, a home completely redesigned to have two individual spaces at the front and the back, and the Pool House, which made the client’s desire to have a large pool the focal point of the house’s design.
Gibert and Tan
Founded on the idea that a small group of experts can create outstanding works, the studio offers architecture and interior design services. Their BRR Headquarters project was a three-storey structure built with reinforced concrete while the adjacent warehouse was constructed with steel.
The 181 Chambers at Semantan is another excellent work which reused a partially demolished house and expanded it to accommodate a law firm’s offices.
Zlgdesign
Established by two London-trained architects, the firm has been in business for approximately 20 years. Their Point 92 project is a single tower with 19 storeys located on a slope. Its distinctive exterior has a white concrete façade with small windows that minimise heat while letting in natural light.
Other well-regarded projects are the Lantern Hotel in Kuala Lumpur and the BOH Tea Visitor’s Centre in Pahang.
Kuee Architect
This architecture company has won multiple awards for its design projects focused on green buildings with great functionality and quality. They designed the 1 Lasam building with the aim to build the first GBI Platinum structure in Ipoh.
The five-storey office space has nako windows for enhanced ventilation that would not require air conditioning during cool weather. Another project, the Galasa Event Place, was inspired by the concept of a black diamond’s geometry.
Compared to other event buildings that typically have lighter colours, the client requested a dark, industrial-looking finish to make the property unique, and the firm delivered on this request with style.
Bottom Line
Malaysia has many notable architectural design studios that are breaking new ground in the industry every day. Other names that are worth noting include Core Design Workshop, S. Pin Architect, SAVA Architects, and Hijjas Architects and Planners.
Numerous other buildings, such as the Mayfair Residences in Sri Hartamas, are proof that the country has a vibrant architectural scene worth keeping an eye on for connoisseurs of design.
